On Tuesday afternoon, September 24, 2024, the breakthrough blast was fired at the southern end of Carlbergtunnelen, marking a significant milestone for the railway project through Moss.

MossIA, responsible for building nine of the ten kilometres of the new double track through Moss, managed the breakthrough. The honor of firing the final blast was assigned to 76-year-old Olaf Schmedling, a representative from Ekholt and Dilling Vel and a seasoned veteran in the tunnel industry. Schmedling has worked on several major tunnel projects, including the Oslo Tunnel.

After the blast, daylight flooding in from the southern end.

To celebrate the occasion, MossIA and Bane NOR gathered with colleagues, partners, landowners, and community representatives, marking the moment with local treats – including the traditional sausage in waffle from Moss, and a cake to honour the milestone.

At Carlberg, tunnel work started in February 2020 and the last blast towards the city centre was fired in December 2022. Afterwork in the Carlberg tunnel continues, and about 60 per cent of the tunnel lining has now been cast. The length of the tunnel is 2.1 kilometres.
